Manager, Sales Engineering (SLED)


The Manager, Sales Engineering (SLED) is responsible for driving software revenue through the effective management, mentoring, and training of a team of Sales Engineers.  This role works closely with the region Sales Director to ensure the pre-sales organization is effectively able to support sales in converting opportunities and ensure the region has scale and skill sets to close sales opportunities.  This is a player/coach position, therefore it is required that the candidate possess extremely strong technical pre-sales, architecture, and major account management skills.  It is expected that a large percentage of time will be focused on major account technical sales campaigns/management.

How you will make an impact:

  • Participate in account planning and opportunity funnel management; work with regional sales management to help formulate sales strategies and aligning appropriate technical resources
  • Perform discovery while engaging with the customer to understand key technical, financial, operational, and business issues that can be mitigated or alleviated with the Commvault suite
  • Distill the discovery into a concise message, outlining the salient technical, business, operational, and financial efficiencies the Commvault suite addresses
  • Propose and demonstrate the Commvault suite of products through the use of white board, presentations, etc
  • Provide technical leadership to the district Sales Engineering team
  • Hire and mentor Sales Engineers focusing on technical development, strengthening business case creation skills, solution architecting skills, competitive product knowledge, and pre-sales account management skills
  • Assist, as needed, with industry speaking engagements or seminars
  • Oversee the creation and presentation of the business value surrounded by merits to C-level executives
  • Keep abreast of industry trends, best practices, and competing/complimentary products
  • Develop strong customer relationships, ensuring that technical account management best practices are being followed by the Sales Engineering team
  • Supervise customer software pilots or “proof-of-concepts”
  • Work with internal departments (sales, support, marketing, development) to ensure success during sales campaigns and/or to ensure the customer experience is extremely positive

What you need to succeed:

  • BS in Computer Science or related technical field (MS in Computer Science or MBA plus)
  • 5+ years in the software or storage industry;  3+ years experience managing pre-sales Sales Engineers ideally within the SLED space.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to lead a team to solve complex business / technical issues
  • Prior experience selling and architecting Data Management solutions
  • Specialized knowledge/skills and demonstrated proficiency with at least one major open Sales operating system (UNIX or NT) and enterprise application exposure or knowledge of (Oracle, Exchange, Informix, SharePoint, etc)
  • Travel 50%+ of the time within assigned territory
